Co-founded by Chris Barlow, Twanette Price, Peter and Kristen Zarabozo, Aurora Corteville and Kevin Wilhelm, the Berlin Equity Action Team, known as BEAT, seeks to support diversity, equity and inclusion in Berlin and surrounding areas by creating and fostering teachable moments with residents and in the broader community. In a historically non-diverse region, this team of remarkable volunteers created and funded Berlin’s Inaugural Juneteenth Celebration out of their own pockets in 2022. This year, they’ve secured a grant from The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain and joined forces with the Berlin Historical Society to expand programming and bring a spotlight to diverse stories.

“Berlin has historically revered its Civil War and other veterans as demonstrated by the town’s numerous military monuments such as the Kensington Soldiers’ Monument, one of the oldest Civil War Memorials in the country,” said Chris Barlow, chair and co-founder of BEAT. “Yet the story of Berlin’s rich Abolitionist History as well as its Black Civil War heroes has gone largely unknown in this small central Connecticut town that is over 90% white.”
